Three Crowns has appointed Hugh Carlson as its first Chief Executive Officer.
Hugh brings significant experience in law firm management and international arbitration to the newly created role, having served in leadership positions at Three Crowns for over six years and represented clients in high-value international disputes across a range of industries and regions. As CEO, Hugh will help shape the firm’s strategic direction and growth. He will also work closely with the firm’s clients in meeting their business needs. Hugh will continue to manage the firm’s global operations and serve as its General Counsel.
Constantine Partasides KC, a founding partner of Three Crowns, said, “Hugh has been with us since almost Day Zero. He has been an integral part of the growth and development of our firm, he knows international arbitration as only a practicing lawyer can, and it has been a real pleasure for us to see him grow into the leader that he has become today”.
Gaëtan Verhoosel KC, also a founding partner of Three Crowns, said, “Hugh’s appointment is one of the great success stories of our firm. A deft disputes lawyer by training but with a knack for business management, Hugh understands our firm and business like no other and we are lucky to see him ascend to this important role”.
About the promotion, Hugh said, “I am deeply touched by the trust and confidence that the Three Crowns partnership has placed in me by appointing me the firm’s first Chief Executive Officer. The firm’s transformation from boutique into market leader is testament not only to its pioneering vision, but to its world-class team of practitioners committed to excellence in their craft. I am thrilled to help lead so talented a team of colleagues”.
Hugh was a member of the counsel team that secured for ConocoPhillips its historic multi-billion-dollar victories over Venezuela’s State-owned oil company PDVSA in 2018 and Venezuela in 2019. Laura Robertson, Deputy General Counsel at ConocoPhillips, says, “this is a well-deserved recognition for Hugh’s invaluable contributions to the firm and its clients. Congratulations to Hugh and the firm for this smart move”. ConocoPhillips’ former Deputy General Counsel Clyde Lea, who has worked closely with Three Crowns since its founding, said, “Hugh’s long experience with the firm, both as counsel and in firm leadership roles, and his exceptional business acumen, make him uniquely placed to provide the strategic leadership that will ensure the firm’s continued growth and success. I am delighted for both Three Crowns and Hugh”.
Consistent with Three Crowns’ commitment to thought leadership, Hugh teaches international arbitration at Harvard Law School and is a co-founder of the law school’s international arbitration workshop. Mark Wu, the Henry L. Stimson Professor at Harvard Law School, said, “over the years, we have been extremely fortunate to benefit from Hugh’s strong commitment to train the next generation of practitioners and thought leaders in international arbitration. From organising and co-directing the International Arbitration Workshop to teaching our course on the Foundations of International Arbitration, Hugh’s investment in our students is helping to ensure that they are well-equipped to think critically at both the practical and theoretical levels about the future of global arbitration practice”.
