The Campaign for Greener Arbitrations Legal Technology Interview Series

Anish Patel, Practice Manager at Three Crowns, and Basil Woodd-Walker, Counsel, Simmons & Simmons, have commenced a legal technology interview series in their capacity as Technology Directors for the Campaign for Greener Arbitrations.

The series comprises interviews with key figures in the arbitration industry on their thoughts on the latest technology advancements and how this can have a positive environmental impact.

LUCY GREENWOOD

In the first of the series, Anish and Basil interviewed Lucy Greenwood, the founder of the Campaign for Greener Arbitrations and an international arbitrator.

Lucy discusses the initial transition from paper to electronic working, encouraging parties to work electronically during proceedings, and agreeing a procedural order and terms of reference when sitting with other arbitrators. Lucy also speaks about her expectations of parties in the context of in-person hearings and provides tips for arbitrators and practitioners.

SAPFO CONSTANTATOS

In the second interview, Anish and Basil spoke with Sapfo Constantatos, Senior Legal Counsel at Standard Chartered Bank.

Sapfo provides a client perspective to adopting more efficient greener practices, tribunals’ obligations in leveraging technology, and compares virtual and in-person hearings. She also discusses challenges to the practice of international arbitration in relation to technology and shares tips for working electronically.

GUY PENDELL

In the third interview, Anish and Basil interviewed Guy Pendell, a partner at CMS.

Guy offers views from a private practice perspective on technology tools that can be used to create a greener arbitration and the main challenges involved, such as changing attitudes away from the need for in-person hearings and reducing the number of in-person arbitration conferences. He also addresses counsel’s responsibilities to clients and when liaising with a tribunal as well as his tips for practitioners when working electronically.

ABOUT ANISH PATEL

Anish is the Practice Manager of Three Crowns, based in London. In addition to being responsible for a number of business services functions, he has assisted teams on multiple cases under all major arbitration rules. He has supported teams at final hearings, including in London, Paris, Singapore, Stockholm, Toronto, and Washington, DC.

Anish is a steering committee member for the Campaign for Greener Arbitrations and is chair of the Community Building, Networking and Scholarship Committee of the Racial Equality for Arbitration Lawyers organisation.
